What we have for you today is a special treat, gentle readers! An interview with the creator of the sure-to-be-a-hit series, Destiny. Creator Chris Ulysses talks with us about his inspiration for the series, where he sees the series going, and what his feelings are about the show airing on VTV this fall!
Pass Pictures: Thanks for taking time out of your busy schedule to sit down and talk with us about Destiny. Seems like everything is going well?
Chris Ulysses: You’re welcome, and yes it is.
PP: What gave you the inspiration for this series?
Chris: Well the inspiration for this story is somewhat based on my life. I have an older cousin living with me who will be starting college this fall, and that is who Bryant is based from. My cousin and Bryant both have parents and a younger brother living in Washington D.C. My mom is an accomplished business woman as is Helen (Dakota's mother). Dakota is based on me. My two best friends are also girls like Sidney and Nicole and I am trying to find my place in the world just as Dakota is.
PP: Why did you want to tell this story?
Chris: Personally I wanted to tell this story because I felt it would be a power house series, full of emotion and drama. From being a witch, coming to grips with your sexuality, parents finding out that you’re gay, being kicked out of school, falling for a warlock, falling in love with a gypsy. All that rolled up in to 12 richly layered episodes for the first season.
PP: How long has this series been in the works?
Chris: This series has actually been in the works for about six months. It was actually an episode in another virtual series I was going to send to VTV but I decided that series was crap on a stick! So as the days went by I kept thinking about telling Dakota's story of fighting for the greater good. And that's how Destiny came to be and there are some major changes between the episode and the actual series.
PP: Have you wanted to do it for a while now?
Chris: Yes. Well the first episode I wrote was an unaired episode that oh my god was horrible and I shall never air it! It was about three gothic girls who become witches. So Destiny has been in the works for a while and I do not see the series slowing down anytime soon.
PP: How do you think the audience will respond to your series? Good, bad, ugly, are you game for it all?
Chris: I truly hope that they respond to it in a good light and it becomes a hit but you never know. Good, bad, ugly, I’m ready for it all, so bring it on! (laughs)
PP: If there is a strong fan base and the show does well with its first season and is picked up further, how many seasons do you think you could get out of the series?
Chris: Well if it is a hit and has a strong fan base it will most likely have five seasons. Who knows maybe it will have more and could go on for ten seasons.
PP: At some point your characters would have to find happiness in never-never-land right?
Chris: Maybe and maybe not. This show was not meant to be fairy tale like, so one of the main characters could die--for example Bryant could be killed in the big battle on the series finale or even, god forbid, Dakota. You just never know with Destiny that's why I think it is such in an amazing show.
PP: Well, at the end anyway, a happy ending? Or not, for a cliffhanger of sorts.
Chris: No there will only be cliffhangers on season finales and I will give you an inside scoop--this season’s finale will be a big cliff hanger. The show will end with closure and make the fans very happy.
PP: Where do you see the overall arc of the series going?
Chris: The overall arch of the series in general is to learn as much about Dakota's Destiny as possible. He has yet to tap into that full power of his prophecy--being the Champion-- that may be something to come into the fold during season two. I know you’re wondering about Bryant. I see Bryant and Dakota moving out into the city during the later seasons. Who knows were they could end up--New York, Los Angles who knows. There are so many possibilities with this series that you just never know what is coming next.
PP: What could we expect from a second season?
Chris: What could you expect from a second season? Well it will tie-in with the first with a big bad from the season finale still hanging around and causing hell on earth. Bryant and Hazels relationship will be tested in new ways with prejudices, possible pregnancy and a lot more. Jake will be on a quest to win back every ones trust and even Dakota's heart. Dakota will finally begin to get a hand on his Destiny, There will be someone causing lots of trouble for the dynamic duo of Bryant and Dakota making the team a trio of power. I have a lot of things you can expect but you will have to wait until the first season has finished airing this October only on VTV!
PP: Thanks for speaking with us! I hope we get to sit down soon.
Chris: Sure, no problem. Be glad to do it again.
“Destiny” will air this fall only on VTV.
