Exclusive Interview Volume 3--FAITH
FAITH—
PP: So tell us what gave you the idea for a Faith series?
BC: Well, I’ve always loved the character of Faith. And I heard that there might be a Faith or Spike series/movie in the works, so I decided to take that Faith idea and run with it.
PP: She’s made a few appearances in the latest season of Angel, which you also created.
BC: Right, she did. She was kidnapped by Spike at the beginning of this year to be offered to what he thought was the PTB so that he could get his Shanshu, and then she reappeared later, pregnant with Robin Wood’s child.
PP: Pregnant. That’s a pretty bold character development for someone like Faith. How did you come up with that idea?
BC: I didn’t, actually. I really stole it. A friend of mine named Todd Barnett who is in the works of refining a new season of Buffy had plans to do that to Faith, and I used it.
PP: Did he mind?
BC: Well, actually, what happened was that his planned 8th season of Buffy was to air alongside my 7th season of Angel. There were going to crossovers and show-to-show threads, and the like. But, Todd decided because of continuity issues between our two shows, that it would be better to shelve Buffy for a while, then bring it back later. Hopefully now he can bring it back.
PP: And are you going to be involved with that?
BC: Yea, actually. Todd, Jenn and I are the current team of writers. But back to Faith, that’s where I got her pregnancy idea from, because we were going to work it into Season 8 of Buffy.
PP: And how will that affect her slaying duties?
BC: It definitely won’t allow her to be as limber and fancy-free as she usually is, and she’ll have to make significant changes. But it may not be all kittens and puppies for her.
PP: What kind of theme does Faith the Series have?
BC: It will largely be about Faith’s journey to the person she is supposed to be. She’s had a rough life thus far, and most of it was not her fault. Her childhood was awful, with abuse and torment. And it was a traumatic experience for her to have her Watcher killed right in front of her when she first was called as a Slayer. Now she’s been in jail, seemingly reformed, and she needs to learn how to be a member of society, form her own group, and not just mooch off of Angel and Buffy like she had in the past.
PP: Seemingly reformed?
BC: Well, Faith will never be on one side or the other. There’s something in her nature that just predisposes her to evil. It’s not her fault, just the way she was made. The way she grew up and was taught about the world. She’s jaded, and it’s going to take a lot of work to make her forget that. She may never.
PP: When can we expect to see Faith on VTN?
BC: Hopefully she’ll make her big debut this fall, sometime. I’m shooting for a September or October beginning. The season will have 12-15 episodes, and will take all our characters through life changing events. Everyone will be different somehow at the end.
